Accessorise or Perish!

One thing you cannot afford to be is boring. Garish, tacky, loud, geeky, whacky, outrageous - all thoroughly acceptable. Boring - an eternal no-no. It's easier than you might think to add a little invention to your look, no more than a few minutes of thought can spruce up your style and make the world of difference.

There's only one real rule for accessorising: go for the unusual. Chances are you will want to add a splash of colour or an extra dash of panache. If you're adding an element then ensure it spices things up a little. Here are a few tips to get you thinking:

The hat: Tipping your hat to a stranger is an underrated practice long due a renaissance. So, too, is wearing your hat askew, like a randy French trumpeter. This black corduroy flat cap from Mario Matteo is every thing you are looking for: it's smart, stylish and the best way to add a touch of class to a casual outfit.

The scarf: Nothing adds an air of sophistication like an elegant scarf. Think Oscar Wilde, Vincent Price and Jude Law - now think, you! It's easy to be a decadent dandy, just loosely tie on something like this black spot silk choker scarf from Peckham Rye for an instant hit of modishness.

The belt: Much more than just a barrier between you and Benny Hill ankles-round-the-trousers lechery, the belt should be a great opportunity to undercut the rest of your style, tipping it toward the unexpected. This Mr. Start white leather belt is a bold addition to any outfit, a dash of hot pepper sauce in your style stew.

This is just for starters, but sometimes it's the small things in life that count - the difference between being ignored and turning heads - so pay attention to the details and your own personal flair will start to flourish.
