The Label: One time former editor of German magazine, Petra, Jil Sander opened her first boutique in Hamburg in 1968, selling her own pieces alongside other labels such as Sonia Rykiel. She quickly gained a cult following though her 'purity' aesthetic— think severe suiting, stark cashmere knits, and monochrome silk dresses. After leaving her own house in 2000 (to take up gardening!), Sander made a brief return in spring 2003, but just a year and a half later, she terminated her contract with then-owners the Prada Group, which hired Belgian menswear designer Raf Simons as creative director in 2005. His influence has resulted in a departure from the austere with appliquéd shorts and electric red, orange, and blue outerwearThe Look: Impeccably tailored suits, and knits in an array of experimental cuts and techno fabrics. We like to call it luxe minimalism. |
