| David Szeto The Designer: The 36-year-old designer of Canadian and Chinese heritage, David Szeto has been eschewing elitist ideologies and creating accessible one-of a kind designs for nearly 20 years. The Paris-based maverick studied at F.I.T and spent a number of years in London before settling in Paris. He launched his first ready-to wear collection in 1993. The Inspiration: Technology, music and designers from Vionnet, Yves Saint Laurent, Cristobal, Balenciaga to Comme des Garcons. Women of style that he has always admired – Grace Kelly, Marlene Dietrich, Millicent Rogers, Martha Graham, Diana Vreeland and Tina Chow – remain constant influences The Style: Szeto’s whimsical garments aren’t traditional, nor is the way he goes about designing them. Like many designers, he drapes fabric around a form to inspire a new dress out of a reel of silk, but Szeto never follows a pattern or a sketch, preferring to rely on instinct. As a result his clothes are always beautifully intricate and complex. |
