| Comme des Garcons The Label: French for “like boys”, the Japanese label Comme des Garcons, established in 1969, is headed by designer extraordinaire, Rei Kawakubo. Having no formal qualifications in either tailoring or design, Kawakubo has always relied on the strengths of her patternmakers to interpret her designs, no small feat considering the designer once thought that lace meant hole-ridden sweaters! The Comme des Garcons label has grown into an enormous empire within the past four decades, with clothing lines, perfumes, and temporary ‘guerilla’ stores dotted throughout the globe. The Look: Always controversial, Comme des Garcon challenged the notion throughout the 1980’s that clothes had to be colourful and sexy to be beautiful. Bordering on avant-garde, the clothes were often monochromatic, asymmetrical, and draped over the body with signature features such as tears, holes and frayed edges. |
